As a then-early middle-age man watching Lost in Translation, I responded exactly as the director/writer, Sophia Coppola, wanted me to in her decision to introduce Ms. Johansson’s character Charlotte in this way. After all, the plot of this movie revolved around young Charlotte’s emotional affair with a washed up middle-age male actor, played perfectly by Bill Murray. I am sure there are thousands of middle-aged men who would love to have had that week in Tokyo with a beautiful but lonely young woman who looked like Scarlett Johansson.

By that I mean so many of Ms. Johansson’s characters are the focus of the attraction of middle-age male characters, or, at least, of male characters who otherwise feel “out of the running” for having a relationship with such a beautiful younger woman. Here I think about the character Birdy Abundas with Ed Crane in The Man Who Wasn’t There; Charlotte with Bob Harris in Lost in Translation; Griet with Vermeer in Girl with Pearl Earring; or Pursy and Bobby in A Love Song for Bobby Long. In other words, Ms. Johansson’s depiction of young women who in one way or another “seduce” men, older men in particular, is so powerful and successful that I am drawn to her in the same way and for the same reasons as those male characters. Now that’s good acting.
